How To Help Troubled Teens By Developing The Ability To Know When They Are Troubled

Help for troubled teens appears to be more needed than ever. Although it is easy for so many to blame the young of today for so many of society's ills, a more constructive approach can save a lot of the need for more retributive forms of punishment further down the line.

So many teenagers are deeply troubled, and these feelings of helplessness tend to worsen when they realize that their parents are not even noticing that there is something wrong. If parents can learn to look for the tell tale signs, which give them an insight into a teenager's mind, then many of the problems can begin to be solved.

In order to help troubled teens, parents would be wise to take part in groups where they can work together with experts to learn to spot the first signs of trouble. The more quickly a problem can be discovered, the better it is for everyone, and the greater the chance of a lasting solution being found. One of the primary tell tale signs is a sudden change in behavior, which an intuitive parent should be able to notice. If the teenager suddenly has a new group of friends, and starts being far more secretive or aggressive at the same time, these are classic tell tale signs of problems.

Getting involved in a good troubled teens program and getting the support you need can greatly improve your ability as a parent. You can learn how to spot what your teenager is thinking beneath the surface, and develop a much greater understanding of what motivates them. You can also get help with something even the best parents struggle with – the formation of a disciplinary procedure.

One thing which is certain to make the problem worse is if the ground rules for behavior are not laid down properly at the start. A rebellious teenager will take advantage of any loophole you give them. One the other side, if you punish a teen for breaking a rule which was not properly laid down, it is obvious that resentment will follow.

If any penalties do need to be applied, try to make it so that they can be reinstated if the teen's behavior changes. For example, if you have to apply a financial penalty by withholding part of an allowance, make it so that the teenager can earn that amount of money back again, by doing something positive, such as work around the house or helping out neighbors.

If you follow the sound basic principles of parenthood, then it is only in rare cases that outside help will need to be brought in. If this does become necessary, it is important not to blame yourself as a parent. In the end, you can only do the very best you are capable of, and your teenager is an individual person acting of their own volition. Bringing in outside professional help is not in any way a sign that you have failed as a parent. Much the opposite. It shows you have the responsibility needed to help troubled teens.
