Why Military Schools For Teens Can Be A Great Idea Provided The Teens Are The Right Type
Military schools for teens are something of a contentious issue. There are many who believe that they are a crude way of trying to deal with problems which really require a very different type of therapy. This is mistaken, in that the schools themselves are quick to point out that they are no substitute for the trained therapists and rehabilitation programs available elsewhere.
The type of children who will benefit from a visit to a military school are ones who have been led astray by other groups of youths. Military schools will not help children with any kind of medical diagnosis, such as depression, or children with any kind of attention deficit disorder. There are other programs designed especially for these, so you would be far better advised to look into these.
Even if your child has no medical diagnosis, you will want to be careful. Many children of a more sensitive type will not respond at all well to this kind of discipline, and it could even lead to long standing psychological problems. These children will respond far better to a treatment which boosts their self esteem in a calm and tolerant atmosphere, such as one of the Christian group schools.
Military schools will only be suitable for those children who respond well to discipline. It is quite possible for such a child to still have serious behavioral problems, because it is possible for the discipline they need to be absent in their life. You find this especially in children who have lost their father, or whose father walked out on them at an early age. Unless they have a very strong mother, or the school is exceptionally attentive, the child can grow up without the strong influence they need to stay on the straight and narrow, and that can lead to behavioral problems.
Military schools for teens have very strict disciplinary codes, which makes them an ideal environment for any child who has behavioral problems when faced with a lack of authority. Drugs and alcohol are strictly not tolerated, and sexual acts of any kind are severely punished, even if they occur off the camp during the time when the child has a pass into the nearest town.
Manual labor is the usual way to punish transgressions. Even the most simple misdemeanor, such as listening to a portable music player in the hall, will earn the offender a sentence of so many hours “detail”, which is the camp's word for extra work. Absence from duty is, of course, a transgression which will earn a large amount of extra work, even if it is a first offence.
In the end, the results, or lack of them, gained from this type of military school are entirely dependent upon the pupil, and their effort. However harsh the discipline, nothing will be gained unless there is input from the recruit to allow this to become a part of their outside life. It is still possible to mentally reject the discipline with anger, and leave the camp with even greater problems than before. It still takes a teenager of character to benefit from military schools for teens.
