How To Overcome The Difficulties Of Parenting Troubled Teens
Parenting troubled teens is no easy task. You had a certain vision of how you expected your child to turn out, and they have not lived up to that. It is very hard for you to deal with the fact that they have become far less than you hoped they would be. No doubt there is an element of self blame in there, somewhere.
Usually, these feelings of self blame are totally unjustified. There is no reason whatsoever for most parents to feel guilty about matters which were beyond their control. A young person is still just that, a person, and that means that they have a mind, and will, and volition of their own.
Getting help with troubled teens is essential. The last thing you can afford to do is ignore the problem and hope it goes away, because it so rarely will. By far the best advice is to get involved with a program designed to help with troubled teens, and allow other people who have been through this before to give you the help and guidance you need.
Of course, all of this is only possible if you aware that there is a problem in the first place, and that is why it is advisable for any parent to have some basic tuition in learning to spot danger signs. So much of the problem can be summed up in the phrase “changes of behavior”, but of course some behavior change is inevitable in the healthiest of children.
It is a behavior change which takes the child away from the family, or established friends, which is the biggest tell tale sign. When a child makes friends very quickly with another group of children who are completely different in character from their other friends, it may be a case of them being led astray. Be watchful.
School performance is another tell tale sign which any parent should be able to spot. Parents who are able to keep in close contact with their children's teachers will have a big advantage here, because they will have allies who will be keeping an eye on the children at a time when the parents cannot do so.
One of the hardest tasks for parents who genuinely care for their children is the formulation of a disciplinary code. For parents of troubled teens, it is even harder. If there is no established code of what is and what is not acceptable behaviour from your child, they will try to take advantage in every way they can. Of course, the opposite is even worse. If you do not have a strict guideline laid down, and then you punish a child for doing something which they were unaware was prohibited, then you will be doing real harm to the parent/child relationship.
Discipline needs to be enforced in a constructive and not a destructive way. If you need to take something away from a child, it will always help if you have a way to give it back if the child does something exceptionally good. Using the carrot as well as the stick is a fundamental of parenting troubled teens.
