How To Select The Right Treatment For Troubled Teens

Treatment for troubled teens is both far reaching and widely available, and provided you take your time to make sure that the program you will be using is compatible with your child's needs, there is no reason why you cannot see dramatic progress, and a dramatic change in your child's behavior.

The wide variety and wide availability of programs can be a double edged sword, in that it can often be difficult to decide which type of treatment is going to be suitable for your own child. One step you should take before doing anything else is to join a support group, where you will be in constant contact with like minded people.

There are so many facilities for troubled teens, all of then offering different programs, that it takes some input from a knowledgeable and experienced person to make sure that you get the choice right. If your child has only just started showing signs of being troubled, then obviously you are in a position where you can take your time.

The hardest choice of all comes when the problems have escalated to the level where you are seriously thinking about a residential program. No parent wants to reach this point, but it is important to understand that this does not mean you have done anything wrong. It is perfectly possible to play a perfect game as a parent, and still have your child need a residential program.

Once it is inevitable that residential facilities for troubled teens are necessary, the task then becomes one of deciding what type of treatment will be effective. The good news here is that we now have decades of evidence to demonstrate which programs are effective with which types of children.

If your child appears to have no serious underlying problems, but has just been led astray by getting involved with a bad crowd, then a short military style boot camp could be just what is needed. These camps only last for long enough to instil a sense of discipline and routine into the child, who is then sent back home.

These boot camps will certainly not be suitable for every child, and there are plenty of alternatives. If your child is a more sensitive type who will be frightened by that type of extreme discipline, why not think about something completely different – a wilderness camp? These camps set in breathtaking rural areas have an astonishing success rate with all manner of teenage behavior problems.

Other types of facilities for troubled teens which are well worth considering are ones run by Christian organizations. These are not the of the extreme 'fire and brimstone' type of religion, but one which preaches understanding and respect for other people.

A Christian boarding school is unlikely to work for a child who has an overt disbelief in anything relating to God or spirituality, although even that is far from certain. Once someone has been exposed to a philosophy which works a lot better than any they have followed before, they tend to embrace it at least to a degree. Christian schools can be a very effective treatment for troubled teens.
